Internship at the Embassy of Denmark in Nepal

The Embassy of Denmark is looking for an intern within the field of Public Diplomacy and Communication. As an intern at the Danish Embassy in Kathmandu, you have a unique opportunity to live and work in one of the most fascinating countries in Asia.
As an intern at the Danish Embassy you will get hands-on experience of the complex political, security and development themes in a post-conflict environment, where development assistance and public diplomacy are at the forefront of the agenda. You will experience up close how the Ministry of Foreign Affairs operates and see how diplomats and local staff work together to enhance the Danish efforts of development and diplomacy in the dynamic context of Nepal.

Living in the ancient city of Kathmandu, you will experience the vibrant culture, rich historical heritage and the friendliness and hospitality of the Nepali people. At the same time you will be confronted with the challenges that come with not only being one of the poorest countries in the world, but also struggling to overcome the legacy of the decade-long civil war that ended in 2006. The current post-conflict phase in Nepal is a historic moment of transition.

The purpose of the internship is to contribute to the education and relevant work experience of the intern. The internship aims at giving the intern an insight into and orientation towards the Danish development assistance in Nepal. Participating in meetings regarding various development and programme related matters combined with at least one field trip will contribute to the practical knowledge and experience of the intern.


Field of work

The intern will participate in the daily work within the areas of Public Diplomacy and Communication. As a part of the Embassy's public diplomacy activities, the intern assists in organizing the Embassy's external communication and participates in implementing the overall communication strategy. The intern will refer to the Embassy staff responsible for Public Diplomacy and Communication, but will assists the Embassy as a whole.

Job description

  • - Develop and implement the Embassy’s communication strategy

  • - Write articles and news to the Embassy’s homepage, Facebook page and other social media

  • - Edit and develop the Embassy’s homepage and Facebook page

  • - Maintain the Embassy’s intranet site

  • - Establish contact and dialogue with media

  • - Participate as an observer and note taker in workshops, seminars, visiting missions and during potential field trips to programmes and projects, etc.

  • - Develop new initiatives related to Public Diplomacy and Communication

  • - Prepare a brief report about a topic of interest to the intern and the Embassy.


The applicant must be registered to a relevant M.Sc. or MA degree education and have completed education up until BA level. It is essential that the applicant has good English skills as well as strong analytical writing skills, a great amount of flexibility, and an eagerness to get to know Nepal. Work experience and knowledge with webpage editing and social media is highly desirable. The applicant is expected to have good interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently and be open for living within the Nepali culture and society.

The intern reports to the Deputy Head of Mission, but assists the Embassy as a whole.


Place of internship
The Embassy of Denmark, Kathmandu, Nepal.

Length of internship
The period of the internship will be from the 1st of February 2016 to the 31st of July 2016.

To apply for the position you must either be a Danish citizen or have had an extensive attachment to Denmark for a longer period of time.

The internship is unpaid, so the intern must be able to cover his/her expenses related to travels, accommodation, living expenses, insurances etc. However, a reimbursement of relevant expenses up to DKK 3.000 per month and local field visit costs will be provided by the Embassy. During the internship Danish State education grants (SU) can be received as per current rules.
