September 13, 2011PRESS RELEASE: EU CALLS ON PRIME MINISTER
The European Union and Swiss Heads of Mission met with Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai on 12 September to congratulate him on being elected as Nepal’s new Prime Minister and discuss the peace and constitution drafting process.
Denmark, assuming the Local EU Presidency in Nepal, urged the new Government to build confidence and show maximum flexibility in order to complete the integration and rehabilitation of the former Maoist combatants and ensure a successful conclusion of the peace process. On behalf of the EU, Denmark also encouraged the Government to work for compromise alongside other parties to finalise the drafting of a new, inclusive and democratic constitution.
Further, the EU representatives expressed great concern about the Government’s reference to the withdrawal and cancelling of court cases regarding crimes committed during the conflict. They underlined that this would be at odds with Nepal’s international human rights obligations.
The EU representatives reiterated to Prime Minister Bhattarai their continued cooperation and support to Nepal and the peace process.
